Lugano makes an ideal base from which to explore the beautiful areas of Northern Italy (Lombardy) and Southern Switzerland (Ticino). For example, Lake Como is only 45 minutes away and an excursion here will allow you to experience the wonders of this Italian Lake - a place well worth visiting while you're there is picturesque Bellagio which is said to be the most beautiful town in all of Italy.

Just over an hour away to the South are the fashionable streets of Milan which make the perfect destination for a great day out from Lugano. There are plenty of trains running between the two cities and these are both fast and efficient. Travel a little West from Lake Lugano and after a while you reach the enchanting shores of Lake Maggiore, the largest of all the pre-alpine lakes. Here you will find the popular resorts of Locarno, Brissago and Ascona which you can explore at your leisure.

If outdoor pursuits are more to your liking then the mountains and dense wooded hills surrounding Lake Lugano make an ideal venue for the plethora of sports and adventure activities available in the region. You could hike some of the many walking trails in the area, try your hand at horse riding or test your stamina on some of the challenging mountain biking routes found around the lake.
